The Democratic Republic of Congo Football Federation has pushed back strongly against Nigeria’s challenge to the eligibility of several Congolese players, warning the Super Eagles against attempting to secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup through administrative means rather than on-field performance.

The reaction follows Nigeria’s petition to FIFA after losing a decisive play-off match to DR Congo on penalties in Morocco, a result that halted the Super Eagles’ progress to the intercontinental play-off. Nigerian football authorities have asked FIFA to review the eligibility of a number of Congolese players who recently switched national allegiance.

At the centre of the dispute is Nigeria’s claim that some of the players may not have fully complied with DR Congo’s domestic nationality laws, which reportedly prohibit dual citizenship. Nigerian officials argue that while the players possess valid Congolese passports and were cleared under FIFA regulations, the underlying nationality process may have been defective.

DR Congo has rejected the allegations outright, insisting that its players were duly cleared and that the outcome of the match should stand. In a pointed message shared via official channels, the Congolese federation accused Nigeria of trying to overturn a sporting result through legal technicalities, stressing that World Cup qualification should be decided on the pitch.

To reinforce its position, DR Congo released images and documentation showing the formal change of nationality of several players, including interactions with the country’s political leadership and records from FIFA’s change-of-association system.

Nigeria, however, remains firm. Officials of the Nigeria Football Federation have confirmed that their petition has been formally submitted and that the issue goes beyond FIFA’s passport-based eligibility rules. According to the federation, the concern is whether FIFA was presented with a process that complied with DR Congo’s own constitutional requirements.

The outcome of the case could have significant implications for Nigeria’s World Cup hopes, as the country faces the prospect of missing consecutive tournaments after failing to qualify for the 2022 edition. DR Congo, meanwhile, has advanced to the final of the intercontinental play-off and awaits the winner of the remaining semi-final.

As FIFA considers the petition, the controversy highlights the growing tension between sporting results and legal scrutiny, raising broader questions about nationality, eligibility and governance in international football.
