In celebration of the inauguration of the 16th democratically elected President, the federal government has announced that Monday, May 29, will be a work-free day.

Telescope.ng reports that the minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, conveyed the declaration on behalf of the Government during a press conference held in Abuja on Friday.

In his address, the minister extended his heartfelt congratulations to all Nigerians on this momentous occasion, applauding their unwavering faith in democracy as demonstrated through the national elections that brought about the President and his Deputy, and indeed in all elections across the nation.

The minister, speaking through a statement delivered by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Shuaib Belgore, urged Nigerians to continue supporting and upholding democracy by adhering to the rule of law and preserving all democratic institutions. He emphasized that democracy is an ongoing endeavour that can only flourish and fulfill its purpose of good governance and the welfare of all citizens when its principles of the rule of law, support for democratic institutions, promotion of a free and responsible press, and the advancement of freedom for all are embraced.

Aregbesola called upon Nigerians to promote ideals of peaceful coexistence and foster love for one another, highlighting that democracy can only be practised and its benefits enjoyed in a peaceful environment. He expressed his admiration for the determined efforts of all Nigerians in achieving uninterrupted civilian rule and successful government transitions since 1999.

Furthermore, he appealed to citizens to support and collaborate with the forthcoming administration, emphasizing that the boundless energy of the people is the nation’s greatest strength. The Minister urged Nigerians to reject any form of violence or misconduct, stressing the need for collective effort and commitment to secure a brighter future for Nigeria.

In conclusion, the Minister reiterated the significance of the work-free day and encouraged all citizens to make the most of the opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to contribute actively towards the nation’s advancement.
