Breaking: Confusion as court reinstates Bayero as Kano Emir
A Federal High Court in Kano has nullified the Kano State Emirate Law 2024, which had dissolved the five Emirates in Kano State.
The court rejected all actions taken by the Kano State Government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law, which was used to dethrone the 15th Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and four others.
In his ruling on Thursday, Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman overturned the Kano government’s actions and ordered all parties to maintain the status quo.
Previously, the Kano House of Assembly had repealed the law that established the 15th Emir and the additional four emirate councils—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—during the tenure of the former governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
The current governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, implemented the repealed law to dethrone Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano and reinstate the dethroned 14th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi.
A former kingmaker in the Kano emirate, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, challenged the state’s actions, seeking a court declaration that the law was null and void through his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN).
