Pensioners under the Contributory Pension Scheme in Osun state are organising a protest against the state government due to outstanding pension payments.

Telescope.ng reports that the pensioners had issued a two-week ultimatum to the Osun state government regarding unpaid pensions.

Comrade Gbenga Oyadare, the chairman of the Contributory Pensioners, stated that the slow pace of payment is insufficient to address the challenges faced by retirees.

He emphasized the need for the government to expedite the payment process to alleviate the suffering of pensioners, highlighting the increasing amount of unpaid pensions over the years.

Oyadare expressed concerns that the current approach may prevent many members from receiving their pensions during their lifetime.

He said: “As of December 2021, our money amounted to N50 billion, so look at 2021 to 2023, another N10 billion has joined it, but the government is releasing our money piecemeal. With the approach of government, it cannot go anywhere. I want to tell you that by the year 2026, it will be four years of this government, and another six years of money will accrue.

“You can imagine, someone that has not been paid anything for the past seven years. Poverty breeds sickness, it will start with hunger and then sicknesses will begin to penetrate which might degenerate into incurable diseases.

“Some of my members have been bedridden, their conditions are so unbearable that we can no longer tolerate the hardship after the removal of the fuel subsidy. No single month will pass that we will not bury our member.”

The pensioners are urging Governor Ademola Adeleke to address this ongoing issue.
