The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) plans to discuss the issue of extending the retirement age for civil servants to 65 years with President Bola Tinubu.

Telescope.ng gathered that the NLC’s national president, Joe Ajaero, stated that the labour union is determined to pursue this agitation, which initially began during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

During the 2023 May Day celebrations, the NLC appealed to Buhari to extend the retirement age for civil servants.

However, former minister of state for Labour, Festus Keyamo, mentioned that Buhari, nearing the end of his term, would not be able to address the matter fully.

Keyamo stated that the new administration would have to handle it.

It would be noted that the teachers employed by the government at all levels already benefit from an extended retirement age.

According to The Punch, when asked about meeting Tinubu regarding this issue, the NLC president confirmed that discussions would take place.

He emphasized that only a few establishments, including the core civil service, are yet to be included in the extended retirement age.

The NLC is demanding that the retirement age and length of service for the entire public service, including the civil service, be increased to 65 years of age and 40 years of service.

The newspaper also reported that the national treasurer of NLC, Hakeem Ambali, also commented on the matter, stating that negotiations are necessary to prevent a potential crisis and the suffering of NLC members whose pension contributions were not remitted to their Pension Fund Administrators by many employers.

He said the proposed five-year transition period aims to normalize the scheme and ensure workers are not pushed into premature death or financial hardship.
