President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially signed the Nigeria Data Protection Bill of 2023 into law on Wednesday, June 14.

Telescope.ng gathered that the development was confirmed by Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), during the validation workshop of the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) in Abuja.

The Nigeria Data Protection Act of 2023 establishes a comprehensive legal framework for safeguarding personal information and governing data protection practices within Nigeria.

The bill underwent thorough scrutiny, as it was presented to the Senate and House of Representatives for careful consideration and eventual passage.

The former President, Muhammadu Buhari, forwarded the bill to both houses of the National Assembly via a letter on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

The new law establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, effectively replacing the previously instituted NDPB, which was established by former President Buhari back in February 2022.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission will be led by a National Commissioner who will assume the responsibility of regulating the processing of personal information.

The enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Bill into law marks a significant step in strengthening data protection measures and ensuring the privacy and security of personal information within Nigeria’s borders.

The establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission will play a crucial role in overseeing and enforcing compliance with data protection regulations, thereby instilling greater confidence among individuals and organizations regarding the handling of their personal data.
