Breaking: Tension, rowdiness as Akpabio, Yari begin battle for Senate president’s seat

Tensions ran high at the upper chamber of the National Assembly as the battle for the leadership of the 10th Senate commenced on Tuesday, June 13.
Telescope.ng gathered that Sani Tambuwal, the clerk of the National Assembly, initiated the proceedings for the election of the presiding officers of the Senate.
Two prominent contenders emerged for the position of the Senate President: Senator Godswill Akpabio, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Akwa Ibom North West, and Senator Abdulaziz Yari from Zamfara North West, also of the APC.
The atmosphere became chaotic when Senator Ali Ndume from Borno South nominated Akpabio, followed by Senator Elisha Abbo from Adamawa North nominating Yari.
As soon as Yari’s name was put forward, a wave of protests erupted among some lawmakers. However, Abbo remained steadfast, raising his voice to challenge those opposing Yari’s nomination and suggesting that they seek legal recourse to address their concerns.
The commotion added to the already charged atmosphere surrounding the election for the number three position in the country.
