FRSC officer, 17 others killed in Ogun multiple accidents

Eighteen people, including an officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), were killed in multiple road traffic crashes along the Gbara area in Ogun State.
The crash, which occurred at about 4 pm on Saturday, involved seven vehicles, including a white DAF truck with registration number T14007LA, Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number AGL752YC, Honda saloon car with registration number HET680, and a Nissan pickup Van with registration number STF10204, according to a statement on Sunday by the FRSC spokesman, Assistant Corp Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide.
Other vehicles involved in the crash were a Nissan pickup van with registration details STF10204 belonging to the Nigeria Police Force, two Bajaj motorcycles with the registration numbers AGG448Q and PKA214WS, and a white DAF truck.
According to the statement, the multiple crashes occurred due to excessive speed and brake failure.
It said the crashes involved 18 victims, comprising 12 male adults, five female adults and one female child, out of which 17 victims, comprising 11 male adults, 5 female adults and a female child, lost their lives
“Only one victim was rescued with injury,” it said.
According to the statement, the Corp Marshal of FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, had expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and “urged motorists to make vehicle maintenance a priority and adhere to speed limits to prevent reoccurrence of such tragedies in the future.”
“He urged all motorists to take responsibility for their actions and respect speed limits, while lamenting that the consequences of speeding are devastating, and FRSC cannot afford to lose more lives on Nigerian roads,” the statement said.
