Tinubu celebrates Ghana’s democratic transition, pledges support for Mahama

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria on Monday, January 7, 2025, delivered a heartfelt address at the swearing-in ceremony of Ghana’s newly elected President, John Dramani Mahama, hailing the nation’s successful democratic transition as a significant milestone for Africa.
Speaking as a special guest of honor, President Tinubu expressed his joy and pride in celebrating African democracy, highlighting that Ghana’s peaceful transfer of power reaffirms the continent’s capacity for democratic and productive endeavors.
He emphasized that the occasion proves to Africa’s critics that the continent is on a steady path to self-reliance and progress, dismissing the need for external validation.
“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves,” Tinubu remarked, adding that African nations, including Nigeria, have found the critical path to success and will continue building resilient economies at their own pace.
The Nigerian president, who was attending the event as both the head of state and a fellow African, reaffirmed his resolute support for Ghana and its people.
He praised the symbolism of Ghana’s Black star, which he said serves as a reminder of Africa’s shared history, unity, and potential.
“While others may seek to demean Africa, that shining star reminds us of who we are and who we can be,” he said.
Tinubu also paid tribute to the spirit of Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and the country’s founding leaders, noting that both Ghana and Nigeria draw inspiration from their legacies of independence and strong bilateral ties.
He expressed confidence that President Mahama’s leadership would strengthen the relationship between the two nations.
“President John Mahama is a man of vision, substance, and patriotism,” Tinubu said, adding that he and the new Ghanaian president share a deep friendship.
He assured Mahama of Nigeria’s unwavering support, emphasizing the strong bond between the two nations.
The Nigerian president further called for closer regional integration, urging both countries to work together on pressing issues such as poverty, youth unemployment, instability, and insurgency.
He expressed optimism that President Mahama’s administration would bring about positive change and progress for the region, leading to greater prosperity for all.
Tinubu concluded his remarks by wishing Ghana continued growth and prosperity, offering blessings for both nations, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the African continent as a whole.
“May Ghana’s democracy continue to grow stronger, and may our future be filled with hope, opportunity, and prosperity,” he said.
