A series of cable cuts have caused equipment faults on major undersea cables along the West African coast, severely impacting data and fixed telecom services in several West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, and Senegal.

According to a statement issued on March 14, by its director of public affairs, Reuben Muoka, the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) said that the disruptions occurred in Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, with additional issues reported in Portugal.

He said that cable companies such as the West African Cable System (WACS) and African Coast to Europe (ACE), which operate on the West Coast route from Europe, have experienced significant faults.

Meanwhile, SAT3 and MainOne cables are also facing downtime.

Additionally, undersea cables that carry traffic from Europe to the East Coast of Africa, including Seacom, Europe India Gateway (EIG), and Asia-Africa-Europe 1 (AAE1), have encountered cuts around the Red Sea, leading to service degradation along these routes.

In Nigeria and other West African countries, Internet access and speed have experienced disruptions in the networks of service providers in the affected countries.

Operators of these cables have commenced repairs already, and services are gradually being restored.

They have promised to work round the clock to ensure that services are restored to the affected countries within the shortest possible time.

It is important to bring this information to the knowledge of corporate and individual consumers on these services.
