In line with its mandate outlined in the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled a revised numbering format for fixed lines, altering the previous eight-digit structure to a ten-digit format.

Telescope.ng reports that this transition would involve the addition of “02” as a prefix before the existing fixed numbers.

In a statement signed by Reuben Muoka, the director of public affairs, the NCC officially communicated this change to the public and affirmed that both the old and new numbering formats will operate simultaneously until the transition is completed on December 31, 2023.

Starting from January 1, 2024, the new numbering format, initiated by the “02” prefix, will become the primary format across all networks.

To illustrate, for a previous number like 09461700, the new format would be 02094617000. Likewise, for existing numbers in cities like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano such as 014630643, 094630643, 084460643, and 064460643, the new format will be 02014630643, 02094630643, 02084460643, and 02064460643 respectively.

It is essential to emphasize that this alteration pertains exclusively to fixed telephone numbers, and there will be no changes to the current mobile numbering format.

The NCC undertook the initiative to fulfill a significant responsibility, aligning with global practices established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN agency overseeing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
