Taiwo Akinkunmi: Minister pays tribute to national flag’s designer

The minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Pa Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of one of our nation’s most enduring symbols.
Telescope.ng reports that during a condolence visit to the Akinkunmi family in Elebu, Ibadan, on Monday, September 4, the minister expressed the profound significance of Pa Akinkunmi’s contribution to our national identity.
In a statement issued by Suleiman Haruna, the deputy director of the press federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Idris conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s deep condolences and support to the Akinkunmi family and the people of Oyo State.
He emphasised that Taiwo Akinkunmi’s legacy represented the unity and oneness of our nation, as exemplified by the national flag he designed.
He said: “Mr President has asked that we come to commiserate with the family and the state and also to tell them that he shares with them in this grief, along with the Federal Government, throughout this period.”
He assured the family that their requests during this time would be carefully considered. Before visiting the Akinkunmi family, the minister also paid a courtesy visit to the governor of Oyo State. During this visit, Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal welcomed the minister and expressed the enduring significance of the national flag’s design.
Lawal said: “He must have had in mind a united country that would always be one.”
He further highlighted the symbolism of the flag’s white colour, representing peace and unity, which remains essential to the nation.
The deputy governor expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for sending a high-powered delegation to condole with the state and assured that the people of Oyo state are ready to cooperate with the federal government in promoting national unity.
The minister was accompanied by top management from various agencies and departments under his ministry during his visit.
