General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the junta in Niger, has strongly criticized the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), labelling them unjustified. Tchiani expressed his perspective during a televised address on Saturday night.

Telescope.ng reports that in his statement, Tchiani called for the restoration of electricity that had been cut off by the Federal Government as part of the embargoes imposed on the coup leaders following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

He communicated this following a meeting with an ECOWAS delegation led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).

Tchiani voiced his view that the economic sanctions imposed by the regional bloc were unwarranted and seemed to unfairly penalize the citizens of Niger.

He highlighted the dire consequences of the sanctions, citing instances of children and patients facing life-threatening situations in hospitals due to the lack of electricity.

He also pointed out that the border closures had made it extremely challenging for people to access essential resources like food and medication.

After the military intervention in Niger Republic, ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum to the junta, demanding the reinstatement of the ousted President Bazoum.

Despite international pressure, the military leadership in the country has remained firm in their refusal to reinstate Bazoum.

During his approximately 12-minute speech, Tchiani raised concerns about ECOWAS potentially mobilizing an occupying army with the assistance of a foreign military force, which he saw as a threat to Niger.

He emphasized that the junta’s intention was not to hold onto power indefinitely but to engage in constructive dialogue that respects the aspirations of the resilient people of Niger.
