President Tinubu to host ECOWAS special meeting on Niger coup

In the wake of the recent coup in the Republic of Niger, which has disrupted the constitutional political leadership in the West African nation, President Bola Tinubu, in his capacity as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will convene a special meeting of regional leaders on Sunday, July 30, in Abuja.
In a statement personally signed by President Tinubu on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, he strongly condemned the current political situation in Niger and pledged that ECOWAS, along with the international community, would spare no effort to defend democracy and ensure the firm establishment of democratic governance in the sub-region.
The gravity of the situation has garnered international attention, with US Vice President Kamala Harris and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaching out to President Tinubu in separate telephone calls on Thursday evening.
Both leaders affirmed the unwavering support of the United States and the United Nations for ECOWAS’ stance and Nigeria’s leadership in restoring constitutional order in Niger.
The upcoming special meeting will provide a crucial platform for ECOWAS leaders to address the pressing issues in Niger and devise strategies to uphold democracy and stability in the region.
