Former Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, has expressed his admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s decisive actions in resolving the long-standing issues of fuel subsidy and multiple exchange rate regimes in Nigeria.

Telescope.ng gathered that Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, visited the President at the State House to extend his congratulations and show solidarity for the steps taken by his friend, who is now leading the country.

During the meeting, Sanusi, an economist himself, commended President Tinubu for addressing critical economic issues such as the fiscal burden caused by fuel subsidies and the complexities of multiple exchange rates.

These were topics that Sanusi had long been advocating for, and he was pleased to see that the President had tackled them head-on from his very first day in office.

Sanusi noted the positive response of the markets to these actions and emphasized the importance of providing feedback to the government when they make the right decisions, not just when they make mistakes.

He pledged his support and encouraged the continuation of these policy efforts.

Sanusi revealed that he discussed with President Tinubu the need for a thorough investigation into the Nigerian Air Force raid that resulted in the deaths of at least 37 herders in Nasarawa state earlier in the year.

The former Emir expressed his concerns about the recurring clashes between herders and farmers and was pleased to learn that the President shared these concerns. They deliberated on the steps necessary to address these issues effectively.

Sanusi also disclosed that he had written a letter to President Buhari regarding the incident and had now sent a reminder to ensure that the matter was not overlooked.

President Tinubu assured him that he would personally review the letter and take appropriate action.

In January 2023, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) accused the Nigerian Air Force of killing approximately 40 herders in the Rukubi community of Doma Local Government Area in Nasarawa State.

According to MACBAN’s president, Baba Ngelzarma, the herders had been returning from Makurdi, where they had gone to reclaim over 1,000 cows seized by the Benue Livestock Guards.

Despite paying fines and retrieving some of the livestock, the herders were ambushed and killed while unloading the cattle upon reaching their destination in Nasarawa.

MACBAN condemned the attack, deeming it a violation of the Geneva Convention, which prohibits the indiscriminate killing of livestock.

Sanusi’s visit to the President signifies his support for President Tinubu’s economic policies and his appeal for justice in the case of the herders’ deaths.

It underscores the importance of addressing economic challenges and maintaining security in Nigeria’s diverse communities.
