Kayode Fayemi, the former governor of Ekiti state, is currently being interrogated at the office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to sources familiar with the matter.

TheCable reports the ex-governor is undergoing questioning at the zonal command of the anti-graft agency in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara state.

Telescope.ng gathered Fayemi arrived at the EFCC facility at around 10 am on Thursday, where operatives of the anti-graft agency are reportedly grilling him over allegations of misappropriation amounting to N4 billion.

The investigation is connected to the handling of funds during his tenure as governor of Ekiti state.

A member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fayemi served as the governor of Ekiti state from 2018 to 2022.

He handed over the reins to Biodun Oyebanji after the latter emerged victorious in the governorship election held in June 2022.

It is worth noting that Fayemi had previously written to the EFCC, requesting a postponement of his invitation due to his involvement in the launch of two books honoring former President Muhammadu Buhari. He claimed that as one of the organizers of the event, his presence was necessary.

This development comes in the wake of the EFCC’s announcement that it intends to pursue outgoing governors and other public officials.

In response, Bello Matawalle, the former governor of Zamfara, called for a holistic probe that includes all officers, expressing his concerns about selectivity.

Matawalle, who failed to secure re-election, demanded that the EFCC extend similar invitations to officers of the Presidency and members of the Federal Executive Council.

In return, the anti-graft agency stated that Matawalle is being investigated for allegedly diverting N70 billion meant for contracts in Zamfara and challenged him to provide concrete evidence to support his claim of inducement against the EFCC’s chairperson, Abdulrasheed Bawa.

The EFCC affirmed its commitment to collaborate with international partners to prevent politically exposed persons from evading justice.
