In a heart-wrenching account, an eyewitness narrated how a man became trapped in his car during the collapse of a three-story building at 10 Oremeta Street, Berger, Lagos, on Saturday, April 19.
The witness, who chose to remain anonymous, explained that the man, his wife, and their son had been dining at a restaurant located within the building before the incident occurred.
According to him, the wife and child had stepped out to fetch something, while the man went to retrieve an item from his car parked inside the compound.
“He was in the car when the building suddenly came down. He didn’t make it out,” the witness recounted, visibly shaken.
Rescue teams have so far pulled two people out alive, while several others—including kitchen staff at the restaurant—are still believed to be trapped beneath the rubble.
An official from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed that a number of vehicles were also buried under the debris. He added that rescue efforts are ongoing to locate and save the remaining victims.
Meanwhile, some hoodlums reportedly took advantage of the chaos, looting food items from the restaurant’s kitchen under the guise of helping with rescue efforts.
