Breaking: DSS confirms arrest, detention of ex-CBN governor Emefiele
In a statement posted on its official Twitter account on Saturday, June 10, 2023, the Department of State Services (DSS) disclosed that Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria who had been suspended, is currently under their custody for investigative purposes.
Telescope.ng gathered that the DSS urged the public, especially the media, to exercise caution when reporting and discussing the matter.
The suspension of Governor Emefiele by President Bola Tinubu took effect immediately on Friday night.
Tinubu also instructed Emefiele to hand over his duties to Adebisi Shonubi, the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will serve as the acting CBN governor during the investigation and reforms.
There were unverified reports circulating late on Friday, suggesting that the Department of State Services had apprehended the suspended CBN governor.
However, Peter Afunaya, the spokesperson for the DSS, has now confirmed that Governor Emefiele is indeed in their custody.
