Female Soldier, Two Children Injured in Nasarawa Grenade Explosion
A female soldier and two children were injured on Wednesday following a hand grenade explosion in Maraba, along Abacha Road, Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred at about 11:46 a.m. on December 24, 2025, when a woman reportedly discovered a grenade while cleaning her apartment and sought assistance from the soldier, identified as Mohammed, to confirm what the object was.
According to an incident report, the explosive device detonated while being handled, resulting in severe injuries to the soldier’s left wrist and other parts of her body. Two children belonging to the woman who brought out the grenade also sustained serious injuries.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the grenade had allegedly been left in the apartment about three years ago by an unidentified soldier who had served in Nigeria’s North-East region. The device was reportedly stored in the room of the soldier’s sister, who lives in the same compound.
Following the explosion, the injured soldier was initially taken to a private hospital in Keffi before being transferred to the Defence Headquarters Medical Centre at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja. She was later referred to Cedarcrest Hospital in Apo, where she is currently receiving treatment. Medical sources confirmed that her condition has stabilised and she is responding to treatment.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. When contacted, the Director of Defence Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, stated that he had not yet been briefed on the matter.
