President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) nationwide, ordering that they be reassigned to strengthen core policing operations in communities across the country.
The directive was issued during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday at the State House, Abuja, attended by top security chiefs including the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu noted that VIPs who require protective services would henceforth rely on the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), which will provide the necessary armed personnel.
The directive is part of a wider plan to increase police visibility and presence, especially in underserved and remote communities where limited staffing has affected effective security coverage.
“In view of the current security challenges facing the country, President Tinubu is desirous of boosting police presence in all communities,” the statement read.
To support this transition, the President has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police personnel and is collaborating with state governments to upgrade training facilities across the federation. The new deployment strategy is expected to bolster frontline policing as the government intensifies efforts to tackle rising security threats nationwide.
