President Bola Tinubu, in a nationwide address to commemorate the 2023 Democracy Day, called on Nigerians to remain resolute in the face of the abrupt decision to remove subsidies, emphasizing that this measure is essential to prevent Nigeria from facing dire consequences.

Telescope.ng reports that while acknowledging that the subsidy removal would contribute to the hardships faced by Nigerians, President Tinubu promised substantial investments in transportation, healthcare, infrastructure, education, and other crucial sectors.

He expressed his commitment to governing with the philosophies of MKO Abiola, which prioritize the welfare of the people over the personal interests of the ruling class, aiming to create a society where citizens can find personal fulfilment and happiness.

In reference to his predecessor’s decision to eliminate the fuel subsidy, President Tinubu stated, “In my inauguration address on May 29, I implemented the resolution made by my predecessor to remove the burden of fuel subsidies, thereby freeing up much-needed resources that were previously concentrated in the hands of a privileged few. I recognize that this decision will impose an additional burden on the masses of our people. I understand your pain. However, we must bear this burden to safeguard our country from collapse and liberate our resources from the control of a small group of unpatriotic individuals.”

President Tinubu empathized with Nigerians, acknowledging the sacrifices they were asked to make for the nation’s survival.

He assured the citizens that their sacrifices would not be in vain, emphasizing that his government would repay them through extensive investments in transportation infrastructure, education, reliable power supply, healthcare, and other public utilities aimed at improving their quality of life.

Highlighting the ideals championed by MKO Abiola, President Tinubu called for a rededication to a democratic system that prioritizes the welfare of the people and offers personal fulfilment and happiness.

He urged elected officials at all levels of government to recommit themselves to selfless service and the delivery of tangible democracy dividends in line with their electoral promises.

The president concluded his address by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fulfilling every aspect of the “Renewed Hope” agenda, which encapsulates the electoral pact with the Nigerian people.
